An unidentified captive-bred tarantula from Ecuador

This captive-bred tarantula came to us as an unidentified animal from Ecuador. Its genus and species have not been established. The earlier version of this page suggested Euathlus, but that was a tentative idea, not an identification.

What the record tells us

The animal is captive-bred and was presented to us as originating from Ecuador. The photograph documents the specimen at this stage of its development. The page does not contain a collection locality, breeder record, sex, measurements, molt history, or diagnostic examination, so it cannot support a species-level identification.

Why the Euathlus idea remains unconfirmed

Euathlus is a recognized genus in the family Theraphosidae, but the current World Spider Catalog species list does not by itself connect this specimen to that genus. Current World Spider Catalog list for Euathlus

A useful next step is a dated specimen record: photographs after each molt, body measurements taken in a consistent way, sex if known, and every available detail about the breeding line. Those records may help a qualified taxonomist assess the animal, but they would not replace examination of diagnostic characters.

For another unresolved identification, see our unknown tarantula from Peru. Our separate unidentified theraphosine record from Ecuador shows how little a photograph and country label can establish.
