Unknown tarantula from Peru: an identification request

This tarantula was presented to us as coming from Peru, but it has not been identified to genus or species. The photograph shows the animal, yet a scientific description cannot be made from this page alone.

Unidentified tarantula presented as originating from Peru

What is known

The source record gives Peru as the origin and draws attention to the legs, dense setae, and an iridescent abdomen. It describes the abdominal colour differently in the excerpt and body text, as green in one place and blue in another. Light, viewing angle, and image processing cannot be assessed from the page, so this revision does not choose between those descriptions.

What is still needed

A defensible identification needs more than a general view. The missing record includes the available provenance, date and life stage, sex if known, measurements, molt history, and diagnostic views. A formal species description would also require taxonomic study of the specimen and comparison with described material.

If you have relevant taxonomic experience, please treat this as an identification request rather than evidence of a new genus or species. For a second transparent specimen record, see our unidentified captive-bred tarantula from Ecuador. Our Antikuna cimrmani field article shows what a named Peruvian record looks like.

Taxonomic reference

The World Spider Catalog is the current reference for accepted spider names. It can be used to check a proposed name once there is enough evidence, but it does not identify this animal from the photograph. World Spider Catalog
